What Does Your Tongue Have To Do With Stress?

Think about the last time you were “stressed”; you may remember your mind racing, a heavy heartbeat or a sense your body was on high alert.

But what about a clenched jaw, or a dry mouth?

Stress can show up in quieter ways too: pursing your lips, clenching your teeth, or a breath so shallow you barely realise you are holding it.

This is where a simple mouth reset can be useful.

It’s not a shortcut for stress hormones, but a quick physical cue to unclench the jaw, move the tongue, slow the breath and notice what your body is holding onto - in less than 90 seconds before bed.

Your mouth can mirror stress

When the body is under pressure, it often shifts into a more alert state.

Breathing may become faster or shallower, the jaw may tighten, teeth may grind or clench, and the mouth may feel dry.

These are all small signs that the nervous system, muscles and saliva are responding to the body’s internal state. Salivary markers, including cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase, are often used in research to understand different parts of the human stress response.1, 2

Stress has also been linked with jaw and facial muscle tension. Studies in people with myofascial pain and temporomandibular disorders have found associations between anxiety, salivary cortisol and jaw-related pain or dysfunction.3

It is the body’s way of giving clues before the mind catches up.

The science behind the tongue exercise

In one small study, researchers looked at a tongue rotation exercise, where participants moved the tongue around the inside of the mouth while researchers measured saliva and a stress-responsive saliva marker.4

After the exercise, saliva increased and salivary alpha-amylase decreased over the following 15 minutes.4

Salivary alpha-amylase is an enzyme found in saliva. It is often used in research as a marker linked with short-term stress-system activity, particularly the sympathetic nervous system - the part of the body involved in alertness and “fight or flight”.2

In plain English: after rotating the tongue, the mouth produced more saliva and showed a change in one stress-responsive saliva marker.

Whilst this is an interesting result, it is important not to overstate it. The study did not prove that tongue exercises alone lower cortisol. It also does not prove that tongue exercises can treat anxiety, or “reset” the entire nervous system.

What it does suggest is more modest: the mouth may be one small, practical entry point for supporting relaxation cues.

How to do the 90-second tongue exercise

This simple routine is inspired by tongue-rotation research and designed as a gentle wind-down cue.

It is not meant to force relaxation; think of it as a way to notice and soften tension before bed.

  1. Unclench - 10 seconds

    Let your teeth separate slightly. Soften your jaw. Relax your tongue. Drop your shoulders.

  2. Tongue sweep - 30 seconds

    Slowly move your tongue around the inside of your mouth, tracing the outside of your teeth and gums. Go one way for 15 seconds, then the other way for 15 seconds.

  3. Tongue rest - 20 seconds

    Place your tongue gently on the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth. Keep the jaw relaxed. Breathe through your nose if that feels comfortable.

  4. Soft hum - 30 seconds

    Inhale gently through the nose. Exhale with a soft hum. Repeat until the 30 seconds are up.

When to do it

A natural time to try this is in the evening, after brushing your teeth and once the lights are low.

Not because tongue rotation is a proven sleep treatment, but because it works well as a gentle wind-down cue: a moment to unclench the jaw, soften the mouth and slow the breath before bed.

It’s also worth noting, a 90-second exercise is not a replacement for sleep, stress management or clinical support if you need it.

But small cues can still matter; relaxing the jaw, moving the tongue, encouraging saliva and slowing the breath may help shift attention out of the day’s tension and back into the body.

Paired with a darker evening environment, less stimulation and a consistent bedtime routine, it becomes part of a more thoughtful wind-down routine. Sleep and circadian timing are closely linked with cortisol rhythms, which is why evening routines that support the body’s natural transition toward rest matter.5

The takeaway is simple: stress affects both the mind and the body.

Sometimes, the first step is noticing where - and giving the body a calmer way to enter the night.
